The Haunting of the Bedok Flats

Singapore has many flats or blocks of tall apartment buildings where families live. A terrible tragedy took place many years ago in one particular flat at Bedok North Avenue near the Bedok Reservoir in Singapore. A man, woman and their child were creating a life for themselves until, in an effort to make extra money, the husband got caught up in gambling. After destroying the family's finances and owing loan sharks a large sum of money, the financial stress started taking a terrible toll on the marriage.

Eventually, the husband met another woman and informed his wife he wanted a divorce. In an event worse than any Shakespearean tragedy, the young mother threw her three-year-old toddler down 25 stories to his death before jumping out of the window herself.

The story turns even more unbelievable as local legend describes the widower eventually had another child with his mistress. On the child's third birthday, the ghost of a young boy, whom the child previously called his kor kor (brother), convinced the child to leap off of the balcony to fly. The child tumbled to his death.

Local residents report the Bedok flats are terribly haunted, and apartments often remain vacant because of the extreme paranormal activity there. Rumors persist that another entire family committed suicide in one flat, and that another person was murdered in an elevator accident caused by a ghost.

Night Screaming Hotel Ghost

Author Russell Lee shares a scary Singapore ghost story about a flight crew in his book series, True Singapore Ghost Stories. This terrifying, eerie ghost tale is about a flight crew checking into a hotel known to be haunted. One member of the crew awoke in the middle of the night to find a girl sitting on the other bed. Terrified, the crew member screamed as the ghost girl pivoted her head in their direction and left out an unearthly scream. The crew member ran out of the hotel room and refused to return.

World War II Ghosts at Changi Beach

During World War II, when the Japanese occupied Singapore, the Japanese government wanted to cleanse the population of anti-Japanese residents. Over a thousand Japanese soldiers set up screening centers throughout the country and screened all Chinese suspected of carrying anti-Japanese sentiments. All suspects were rounded up at several sites for execution. Tens of thousands of Singapore's Chinese residents were executed throughout 1942, but one of the most famous locations was Changi Beach. Chinese suspects were shot by a firing squad, and some witnesses report that many victims were beheaded by bayonet.

Singer Experiences Ghost in a Drain

Tufik Batisah is a famous singer from Singapore. One night, he was driving home when a friend felt ill. She got out of the car and sat by a large drain so she could be sick. Batisah noticed his friend was just sitting, not vomiting, so he got out of the car to go talk to her. She said she was watching a girl in the drain getting sick, but there was nobody there. His friend was lying on the ground, so he carried her to the car and drove her home, leaving the friend with her sister. Later, the sister called Batisah and told him her sister kept asking to be taken back to the drain so she could help the girl there who was all alone.

Ghosts of the Victoria Theater

There are many ghost stories about the old Victoria Theatre. The third and fourth floors are off limits. No one offers a reason why, but even the performers dare not venture onto these floors simply because they feel so spooky. Some of the stories tell of a young girl crying or laughing. Some people report hearing a disembodied female voice call out their names.

Catching a Ride Home to the Cemetery

It seems like ghosts are universal. Singapore has its share of ghosts getting a ride to a particular cemetery. There are several stories of cab drivers catching a fare in the middle of the night. The individual asks to be driven to the Lim Chu Kang Cemetery. Upon arrival, the ghostly passenger pays the cabby with dried leaves. Other versions of the story tell how the passenger just disappears from the back seat.

Swissotel The Stamford, Singapore

The 73-story hotel is said to have an unusual amount of paranormal activity. Many believe the ghosts of those executed during Japanese Occupation on the very ground where the hotel was built are the source of the unrest. Pontianak on a Deserted Road

This tale is a classic. It takes place on a lonely road in the middle of nowhere. A beautiful young woman with long shiny black hair is hitchhiking. Someone stops to offer her a ride. When she gets into the car, the pungent scent of frangipani flowers from the plumeria tree fill the car. The driver soon discovers too late that their passenger is the Pontianak. This is a woman who unfortunately died giving birth. Sometimes the story states the baby was stillborn. The Pontianak is doomed to walk the Earth as a vampirish creature, intent on finding her next victim - the poor good-hearted driver who offered her a ride.

Charlie Company's Third Door

One of the most famous ghost stories is the 1980s tale of a soldier who disappeared during a routine basic training march. The Private was sick, so he was left behind on the trail to recover then catch up with Charlie Company. He never showed up. The men searched for him, but it wasn't until the following day that they found him...dead. His intestines were neatly laid beside his body. There was no blood, just a very neat abdominal incision.

His spirit refused to leave the camp. His fellow soldiers reported hearing him call out to them, his bunk shook in the middle of the night, and soldiers were shoved away from the bunk bed. Several soldiers were wakened during the night only to find him standing over them. It wasn't until priests were summoned that the haunting stopped. The priests suggested the military install a third door so the soldier's spirit could be released. The third door was installed and his ghost was no longer seen or heard.

Ghost of Ang Mo Kio Bridge

In the 1920s, a couple and their three children, two boys and a girl, lived on an estate that was located near the Ang Mo Kio Bridge. One day the three children were playing around the bridge when a sudden flash flood washed over them. All three of them died, but the little girl's body was never found. The woman swore that she could hear her daughter calling out and would stand on the bridge trying to coax the child's ghost to come home. She stood on the bridge every day for the rest of life, waiting for her daughter to come home.
