Whether you are connecting to the flow of Divine via channeling or you simply want to tap into your subconscious, using automatic writing can help you connect with other parts of yourself your conscious mind may not even be aware exists. Using automatic writing exercises and prompts as part of a daily practice can help you tune in to your inner voice or to higher guidance.
Use Automatic Writing Prompts
One way to get ready for automatic writing is by working with writing prompts. With these prompts, try to let your hand(s) work automatically either at the keyboard or with pen to paper. If your hands don't move automatically, then simply type the first information to enter your mind without censoring or editing it.
- What is fear?
- What is love?
- What is death?
- What choices am I making that are currently keeping me from experiencing what I wish to experience?
- What am I holding onto in my life that no longer serves me?
- What is the Divine purpose of my relationship with ____________________?
- Why am I afraid of _________________?
- What is my highest vision of myself?
- If I had everything I wanted, how would I feel?
- Why is ___________ in my life?
- What do I need to know today?
- What does _________ dream I had last night mean?
- What is the most important path I could walk right now?
- What does spirit wish to tell me today?
- What career path should I seek?
- What am I missing/not understanding about __________?
- What part of my shadow self do I need to acknowledge?
- What fears do I have that are driving my choices and behaviors?
- Who in my life is a part of my soul group?
- How can I live a more compassionate life?
- What signs is the universe giving me that I need to pay attention to?
- List things I need more of in my life.
- List things I need less of in my life.
- What is my most significant challenge right now and what has it come to teach me?
- The most important lesson I am facing right now is _____________________.
- The experiences in my life I most need to cultivate are __________________.
- How can I best be of service in the world right now?
- What would future me want the me of today to know?
Put Pen to Paper
This can feel uncomfortable when you first start, but it is a good way to begin to trust in the process of automatic writing, and it's easy to do. With nothing on your mind (preferably after meditating), simply put pen to paper without expectation and see what happens.
- Put the pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard).
- Close your eyes and focus on your breathing.
- Continue to focus on your breathing and allow your hand(s) to move without opening your eyes.
Try Continuous Writing
Continuous writing helps you move past blocks and tune into intuitive information. To do it, use one of the writing prompts below or come up with your own prompt.
- Don't think too hard. Just write the first information that flows into your mind, even if it seems like nonsense.
- Focus on the sensation of writing or typing as you do. Don't think too hard - just allow the writing and/or typing to flow.
- If you get "stuck"; that is, if your mind goes blank or your attention wanders, write the word you got stuck on over and over until new words come.
- Continue for five to ten minutes, or until you get a sense of being done.
Ask Questions and Answer Them
In this simple exercise, ask any open-ended question you wish or use the prompts below and then write the first thing that comes to mind as the answer. Don't think hard, don't edit, and don't worry about making sense. Just write what comes to mind. When you feel you've finished one answer, move onto the next question. Continue for five to ten minutes, or until you feel "done."
Use Art or Music as a Focus
Put on a piece of music or gaze at a favorite piece of art. At the same time, place pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and allow your hand(s) to move as you listen to the music or gaze at the art.
Write to Binaural Beats
Use a binaural beats app and listen to it on headphones. Close your eyes and put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard. Allow your hands to move as you listen to the binaural beats without thinking about what you're writing or censoring it.
Before Doing Automatic Writing Prompts and Exercises
It's always best to get in a meditative space before engaging in automatic writing prompts and exercises. To do this:
- Go somewhere that you won't be disturbed and are comfortable but can easily write.
- Have your writing materials at the ready (pen/pencil and paper or computer).
- Close your eyes and take three deep breaths, breathing in through your nose and allowing the air to travel all the way into your stomach. Exhale through your mouth.
- Now, breathe normally and focus on your breathing. If your attention wanders, bring it back to your breath.
- Sit focused on your breathing for about five minutes; then, open your eyes and go straight into your automatic writing exercise or prompt.
Flex Your Automatic Writing Muscle
Automatic writing is a practice that allows you to tap into your inner guidance, deeper wisdom, or even messages from spirit. The more you practice, the better you become at it. So grab a pen and paper (or a computer), set aside self-criticism and judgment, and try these automatic writing prompts and exercises. You may just tap into a well of inner wisdom you were unaware you possessed.
